Dakota Reflections
The eastern bluebird migrates into North Dakota during the spring from southern states. The bluebird lives in meadows surrounded by trees that offer suitable nest holes. The eastern bluebird feeds on insects and berries.
The eastern bluebird has historically been thought to have a breeding region that was separate and distinct from the mountain bluebird's breeding region.

Mountain bluebirds breed in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP), the eastern edge of their range. Eastern and mountain bluebirds are thought to have separate ranges except during migration. Eastern bluebirds are seen in Bismarck, the western edge of their range, but are infrequently seen in TRNP.

Do Eastern and Mountain Bluebirds breed in the same areas?
According to the Avian Report
What about the mountain and eastern bluebirds?
These two bluebirds have an even larger area of overlap than western and eastern bluebirds. Mountain and eastern bluebirds can be found together in northwest Texas, the eastern half of Arizona, eastern Utah, and western Colorado. These bluebirds overlap only during the non-breeding season of approximately October through February. This period corresponds to the period when birds migrate in semi-nomadic flocks.

On June 29, 2024, I saw and photographed eastern bluebird fledglings near mile maker 5 in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The next day, on June 30, 2024, I saw and photographed mountain bluebird fledglings near mild maker 6 in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Eastern and mountain bluebirds now overlap in their breeding ranges.
