Dakota Reflections
When you got to go, you got to go!
There is more to poop than meets the eyes. Rhinos use piles of dung to communicate with other rhinos. Male rhinos can tell from dung if a female rhino is in heat. Rhinos can tell from dung piles how many other rhinos are in the area and if anyone is encroaching on their territory. Elephant calves injest maternal dung to obtain healthy bacteria to assist with digestion as do baby hippos, koalas and pandas. Dung contains significant calories and can be used as a food source if necessary. Bird dung or guano has been used as a fertilizer in Peru for over 1500 years. Extensive harvesting of guano in South Africa resulted in loss of habitat for hundreds of thousands of African penguins which are now endangered.

This Mountain Bluebird Mom was busy feeding her 5 babies and cleaning out their poop sacks. This is the first time I photographed Mom grabbing the sack as it was being produced!

Almost Done!
This Mountain Bluebird Mom helped her pooping baby- then it was out the door (nest) with the sack. The parents worked hard to keep the nest clean.
