Arctic Habitat and the Arctic Circle
The Arctic Circle is at 66 degrees, 33 minutes, 45.9 seconds latitude north where the sun remains above the horizon for at least one 24 hour period a year. Churchill, Manitoba is at 58 degrees north latitude.
In the strictest sense, the Arctic is all of the Earth north of the Arctic Circle, located at approximately 66 degrees, 34 minutes North Latitude. However, there are other definitions of the Arctic to suit specific scientific or political interests. For instance, the U.S. Congress has decreed that all of the Bering Sea, which extends southward to about 53 degrees North Latitude, is part of the Arctic for internal U.S. planning and budgeting purposes. Others make use of such markers as the southernmost extent of winter sea ice for oceanic boundaries of the Arctic, or the treeline for terrestrial boundaries. (NOAA) NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION
Polar bears are the largest land carnivores on earth, equal in size to the Kodiac brown bear. Male polar bears average from 700 to 1500 pounds and can rise to nearly 10 feet tall. Females are one half as heavy as males. Polar bears can smell seals 1 mile away or 3 feet under snow. Polar bears are insulated with 4 inches of bludder. They can sprint at 25 mph and swim for days in the frigid Arctic waters. Females become sexually mature at age 4 to 5 years and average two cubs in a litter. Pregnant polar bears enter their snow den in early winter, give birth in midwinter and exit the den between mid February to mid April. Cubs stay with their mother for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years.
The arctic fox is a small fox with thick fur that is brown in the summer and white in the winter. The arctic fox feeds on lemmings, voles, fish, birds, berries and insects. They live in large dens with a complex tunnel system. In some parts of the world, the red fox has expanded in to arctic fox territory and is now a predator of the arctic fox.

Wapusk National Park
Wapusk National Park is Canada's 37th national park, established in 1996. The name comes from the Cree word for polar bear (wâpask). Located on the shores of Hudson Bay in the Hudson Plains ecozone 45 kilometres (28 mi) south of Churchill, its accessibility is limited due to its remote location and an effort to preserve the park. The park is home to Cape Churchill, which is renowned as the best location in the world to view and photograph wild polar bears. Cape Churchill is only accessible by helicopter or Tundra Buggy. Wapusk derives from the Cree word for "white bear", and as the meaning indicates, the 11,475-square-kilometre (4,430 sq mi) park is a significant maternity denning area for the polar bear, Ursus maritimus. It includes a large part of the Hudson Bay Lowlands, a subarctic region bordering Hudson Bay that is mostly muskeg and wet peatlands. It is one of Canada's wildest and most remote landscapes. In winter, the polar bears of Wapusk National Park come ashore as the ice on the Hudson Bay melts, waiting on the tundra until the water freezes again. Pregnant females remain ashore, sheltered in maternity dens within the peatlands in Wapusk, giving birth over the season. Numerous birds are found in Wapusk National Park and it is a likely breeding area of the short-billed dowitcher. This national park is home to animals such as polar bears, great grey owls, timber wolves, lemmings, ivory gulls, two species of fox, peregrine falcons, snowshoe hares, moose, wolverines, Caspian terns, and a herd of 3000 Cape Churchill caribou.
